Genesee County Land Bank groups add measures to help prevent illegal landfills

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) –

Frustration over the scourge and illegal dumping grounds in Flint continues throughout the weekend as people work to prevent these problems from happening across town with a few new initiatives.

This is an issue that we have been tracking for months.

ABC 12 took a closer look at what the volunteers at Genesee County Land Bank tried to do about it.

“We thought, by placing rocks [it] will allow [the] opportunity to dissuade them from looking at this site to throw away.

Flint resident and community activist Quincy Murphy works to keep his neighborhood clean with the help of the Clean and Green program at the Genesee County Land Bank.

“This is an addition to the Clean and Green program, which allows groups to take preventative measures to prevent the spill,” he said.

Groups of people with the program had gone out to three different locations on Saturday.

Volunteers have helped to board vacant homes, remove overgrown trees and plants, and even add initiatives in the hope that this will prevent people from dumping illegally.

“We installed the blocks. We also installed cameras to be able to record. We are going to watch [and] monitor, ”Murphy said.

With rocks blocking vacant lots and new cameras installed, Murphy’s mother Debora, who lives on Marengo Avenue, says she has watched people illegally throw on her street for years.

Fed up with the mess, she put on gloves and started picking up the trash herself.

“You have older people on the blog and they have to watch this. So I hope it will work. But again, I keep an eye out for the trucks and stuff going up and down my street, ”she said.

Murphy says this is the first time they’ve implemented this program and hopes they can do more across town.

“I would like the Clean and Green program to be extended to the entire town of Flint. “
